
Shifts
A typical evening
Volunteers can choose to work any shift. We recommend that you commit to work at least four shifts over the course of the winter. We are especially in need of volunteers to work the night shifts. A minimum of three or four volunteers are needed per shift.
Set-up Shift (time varies depending on the site) - approximately 7:30 p.m.
- Ready sleeping area
- Set up coffee/snack area
1st Shift, 8:30 – 11:30 p.m.
- Register guests
- Receive and label medications
- Socialize with guests, make coffee as needed
- Monitor all areas and secure doors
2nd Shift, 11:15 p.m. – 3 a.m.
- Maintain intake desk
- Admit approved late arrivals
- Monitor all site areas hourly
3rd Shift, 2:45 – 6 a.m.
- Maintain intake desk
- Admit approved late arrivals
- Monitor all site areas hourly
- Awaken guests
- Assist in preparing site report
Clean-up Shift, 6–7:30 a.m.
- Wipe down and put away cots, pillows, tables, and chairs
- Collect and bag bedding for laundry
- Mop or vacuum floors
- Clean restrooms
- Empty trashcans
- Set up space for day useS
